What is Margherita Pizza?
Margherita pizza is one of the most popular classic Italian pizzas. It is an old traditional Italian recipe originating in Naples in the late 18th century. As the name suggests, the main ingredients of the Margherita pizza are tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and extra virgin olive oil. But the simple combination of flavors and toppings is what makes it such a timeless classic. Over the years, countless variations have developed, but the classic Margherita pizza still stands out for its unique taste and texture. So, let’s explore what makes Margherita pizza so special and why it has become a worldwide favorite.
History Of Margherita Pizza
The origins of the Margherita pizza can be traced back to Naples in the late 18th century. It was initially created to honor Queen Margherita of Italy, who was known as the symbol of the Italian unification. According to the legend, Raffaele Esposito, a renowned Neapolitan chef, prepared various pizzas for her majesty, and the Margherita pizza was the only one she really liked. This pizza was different from other Italian recipes, and the combination of tomato, cheese, and basil was a symbol of Italy’s red, white, and green national colors. After tasting it for the first time she exclaimed: ‘The colors are those of the Italian flag!’. Thus, the Queen Margherita pizza was born!
Ingredients Of Margherita Pizza
Margherita pizza only requires a few fresh ingredients to make it, including tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and extra virgin olive oil. Tomato sauce is the main ingredient of Margherita pizza and is usually made with fresh tomatoes that are cooked and blended into a puree. Mozzarella cheese is an essential ingredient in Margherita pizza and is usually made with cow’s or buffalo’s milk. Fresh basil is another important element of Margherita pizza and can be used either as a whole leaf or finely chopped. Extra-virgin olive oil should be added to the Margherita pizza for extra flavor and texture. The combination of these four ingredients makes Margherita pizza so unique and special.
How To Make Margherita Pizza
Making Margherita pizza is simple and requires only a few ingredients. To start, preheat the oven to 450F. You will then need to roll out the pizza dough and spread the tomato sauce over it. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the sauce and top with fresh basil leaves and extra-virgin olive oil. Finally, you will need to bake the Margherita pizza for 20 minutes before serving. The end result should be a delicious pizza with a crispy crust and melted cheese.
Margherita Pizza Variations
In addition to the classic Margherita pizza, there are many variations that have become popular over the years. Some of the most popular variations include Hawaiian pizza (with ham and pineapple), mushroom pizza (with mushrooms and onions), pepperoni pizza (with pepperoni and mozzarella cheese), and spinach pizza (with spinach, garlic, and ricotta cheese). These are just a few of the many variations available, and you can create your own Margherita pizza variation by adding other flavors and ingredients.
