Classic Butter Spritz Cookies

Rich and delicious classic butter spritz cookies with a hint of vanilla and the perfect crunch.

  • Total Time: 23-30 minutes
  • Yield: 24-30 cookies 1x

Units Scale

1 cup butter
1 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
1/2 cup flour (optional)
Colored sugar for decoration (optional)

1. Cream the butter in a large mixing bowl, gradually adding the sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla.
2. Combine the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt. Add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture.
3. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
4. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface. Cut into desired shapes and place on the cookie sheets. Sprinkle with colored sugar, if desired.
5. For log cookies, shape the dough into logs 2 inches in diameter. Chill for one hour. Slice logs into 1/8 inch slices and place on the prepared cookie sheets. Sprinkle with chopped nuts, if desired.
6. For ball cookies, shape the dough into balls. Roll in sugar-cinnamon mixture, if desired. Place on the prepared cookie sheets.
7. For cookie press cookies: put the dough in a cookie press and press into desired shapes. Chill the shapes before baking. Place the chilled shapes on the prepared cookie sheets.
8. For walnut cookies, add 1 cup chopped walnuts and 1/2 cup flour to the cookie dough. Chill then shape into balls and place on the prepared cookie sheets.
9. Bake all cookies for 6 to 8 minutes (for cut-out and log) or 8 to 10 minutes (for ball and press) or until the edges start to just turn golden. For walnut cookies bake for 8 to 10 minutes, then roll still warm cookies in confectioners’ sugar. Once cool sprinkle chilled cookies with more confectioners’ sugar.
10. Let the cookies cool for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Cookies can also be sprinkled with chopped nuts for additional flavor.
Chocolate chips, raisins, or dried fruits can be added for a different flavor.
Use flavored extracts (e.g. lemon, almond, coconut, mint) instead of vanilla to change the flavor of the cookies.
