However this week’s baking challenge was Dorie’s Chocolate Armagnac Cake – The Cake That Got [Her] Fired. I was hoping to squeeze in some baking time to make this cake, because how unique it was. Dorie’s Chocolate Armagnac Cake is unlike no other chocolate cake recipe I’ve ever seen. This recipe involves prunes soaked and flambeed in Armagnac, a specific type of Cognac, which is then stirred into the chocolate cake batter. It’s an intriguing recipe that I hope to try sometime in the future.
As for how this specific cake got her fired, Dorie took a creative and bold move while in her first real professional kitchen job. She was responsible for making a chocolate cake using whisky and raisins. When Dorie got bored with the recipe, she switched up the cake by using Armagnac and prunes… without informing anyone. As a result, she was fired for this change to the cake. I find it a blessing in disguise for her because Dorie has talent and deserved to be in a position that showcased and appreciated that!
Please be sure to check out fellow Tuesdays With Dorie Bakers for how their Chocolate Armagnac Cake turned out. For recipe, check out Lyb’s blog – And then I do the dishes. I will be back with next week’s baking challenge with Lemon Cup Custard!
Where are you moving?
If you find the time, you might want to do this as a rewind. The cake is soooo good.
I hope your load gets a little lighter this week!
Yikes! Moving can be stressful! I hope it goes smoothly!
Good luck with your move. You mentioned it’s in an awesome hi-rise location in Chicago – I so miss the Windy City! Sorry you missed this week’s challenge; I would’ve loved to see what you would’ve done with this one!
