Philly Burgers

A tasty homage to the Philly cheesesteak, these Philly Burgers feature perfectly seasoned beef patties topped with caramelized onions, sautéed bell peppers, and melted provolone cheese.

Units Scale

1 red onion, sliced
1 red bell pepper, cored & sliced into strips
1 green bell pepper, cored & sliced into strips
1 yellow or orange bell pepper, cored & sliced into strips
1 1/2 lbs ground chuck (90% lean)
2 1/2 tablespoons canola oil
4 hamburger buns, split, toasted if desired
4 slices of provolone cheese
Salt and pepper to taste


Heat 1 tablespoon of canola oil in a sauté pan over medium-high heat.
Once the oil shimmers and is hot, add the sliced onion and bell peppers to the pan.
Sauté the vegetables until they are soft, then continue cooking until they become caramelized, roughly 7-10 minutes; afterwards, remove from heat and set aside.
Divide the ground chuck into 4 equal portions, or 8 equal portions if making sliders.
Form each portion of meat loosely into a patty that is approximately 3/4 inch thick, and press a deep depression into the center of each using your thumb.
Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper according to your taste preferences.
Cook the patties using the remaining canola oil in a hot pan or on a grill, applying brushed oil onto each patty to prevent it from sticking to the surface.
A minute before finishing cooking, top each burger with a slice of provolone cheese and use a basting cover to melt the cheese.
Place the cooked burgers onto the bottom halves of the hamburger buns.
Top each patty with a portion of the caramelized onions and peppers mixture.
Cover the burgers with the top halves of the buns and serve the Philly Burgers immediately.
