Irish Soda Bread Recipe without Buttermilk

A classic Irish soda bread recipe without buttermilk.

  • Total Time: 50-55 minutes
  • Yield: 1 loaf 1x

Ingredients

Scale

3 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 cup raisins
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 cups plain yogurt

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
Stir in the butter, raisins, egg, and yogurt until combined.
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for 1 minute.
Form the dough into an 8-inch round.
Place the dough on a greased baking sheet.
Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Serve warm with butter.

Notes

For a sweeter soda bread, add an extra tablespoon or two of sugar.
You can also substitute the raisins for other dried fruit such as currents or diced apricots.
