Spanish Peas with Ham

A simple, traditional Spanish side dish of sweet peas sautéed with savory ham and aromatic garlic, garnished with fresh parsley.

1 small onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
100g ham, diced
400g frozen peas, thawed
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
Salt to taste
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped


Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
Incorporate the minced garlic and diced ham into the skillet, sautéing for 2-3 minutes until the ham is lightly browned and aromatic.
Sprinkle in the smoked paprika and stir to distribute evenly with the onions and ham.
Stir in the thawed peas and cook for 5-7 minutes until they are heated through and tender.
Season the mixture with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Remove the skillet from heat and sprinkle chopped fresh parsley over the peas and ham, stirring gently to combine.
Serve the Spanish peas hot as an accompaniment to your main dish.


Traditionally, this dish uses jamón serrano, but other types of ham or even bacon can be substituted.
To preserve the vibrant green color of the peas, avoid overcooking them.
This dish can be easily made vegetarian by omitting the ham and using vegetable broth for added flavor.
