German Meatball Recipe

A tasty and hearty German meatball recipe that is perfect for a weekday dinner.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Units Scale

1 lb ground beef
1 lb ground pork
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 arepa
2 eggs
1/4 cup ghee or butter
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups beef or chicken broth

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, onion, garlic, paprika, caraway seeds, allspice, salt, pepper, and arepa. Mix with your hands until fully combined.
Beat the eggs in a small bowl and add to the meat mixture. Mix until fully incorporated.
Shape the mixture into small 1-inch balls and set aside on a plate.
Heat the ghee or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the meatballs and cook, turning occasionally, until browned all over, about 8 minutes.
Remove the meatballs to a plate and set aside.
Reduce the heat to medium. Sprinkle the flour into the pan and whisk to incorporate. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture is golden and toasted, about 2 minutes.
Slowly add the broth, whisking to incorporate. Continue to whisk until the mixture is smooth and thickened.
Bring the sauce to a simmer and return the meatballs to the pan. Simmer the mixture for 4-5 minutes until the meatballs are cooked through.
Serve the meatballs with the sauce over mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetable side dish.

You can make the meatballs ahead of time and store in the refrigerator for up to two days before cooking.
For a shortcut, you can use store-bought arepa instead of making it from scratch.
